Celebrate World Behaviour Analysis Day with LRCSS!
A week long celebration until BF Skinner’s Birthday on March 20th.
Join Lake Ridge Community Support Services as we celebrate World Behaviour Analysis Day on March 20th! This year is particularly special as we mark our 40th year of service and embrace the global theme: The Science that Unites the World.
As an agency we’re reflecting on 40 years of evolving science—from Skinner’s foundations to the compassionate, community-focused practices of today.
The Science that Unites the World is about understanding human behaviour and what motivates it. What started out as a way to motivate one another to “fit in” is evolving to become so much more. The science of behaviour spans everything from education to elite sports. For LRCSS it’s about helping individuals thrive in a world not designed for them.
How we use the Science of Behaviour?
Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) uses the science of learning to understand how environments shape actions. By using reinforcement, we build meaningful skills and reduce barriers.
Evolving with the science: While early ABA focused on compliance to neurotypical standards, today we prioritize assent, and autonomy —moving from "fixing" behavior to empowering individuals to live fulfilling, independent lives. We use ABA to help individuals navigate a world not designed for them. Services are highly individualized to meet the specific needs and goals of each person we serve. LEARN MORE
Who was BF Skinner?
B.F. Skinner was an American psychologist and the father of Operant Conditioning. He pioneered the study of behavior via reinforcement, moving the field toward a rigorous science that adapts to help diverse modern communities. Today the science of behaviour is used in many walks of life including in our work supporting individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities.
Here are 5 key areas beyond ABA where the science of behaviour is making an impact today:
1. Organizational Behaviour Management (OBM)
Just as we use behaviour science to help individuals, businesses use it to help teams. OBM focuses on improving workplace safety, increasing employee productivity, and boosting job satisfaction by arranging environments that reinforce success.
2. Behavioral Gerontology
As our population ages, behaviour analysis is being used to support seniors. This includes developing strategies to maintain memory, managing the behavioral symptoms of dementia, and helping older adults retain their independence for as long as possible.
3. Education and Instructional Design
Beyond the clinic, ABA principles drive Direct Instruction and Precision Teaching in classrooms. These methods help neurotypical and neurodiverse students alike by breaking complex subjects into manageable steps and providing immediate, helpful feedback.
4. Behavioral Sports Psychology
Elite athletes and coaches use the science of behaviour to "level up." It’s used to refine specific motor skills (like a golf swing or a swim stroke), increase the consistency of practice, and build the mental resilience needed for high-pressure competitions.
5. Environmental Sustainability
A growing field called Behavioral Climate Science uses reinforcement and environmental design to encourage sustainable habits. By understanding what drives human choices, analysts help communities reduce energy consumption, increase recycling, and adopt eco-friendly lifestyles.
