☕ Caregiver Coffee Club: Navigating Public Meltdowns & The "Why" of Dysregulation

Beyond the Public Eye: Finding Safety and Support in the Midst of Meltdowns

Join us for a focused session of our Caregiver Coffee Club

This is a safe, virtual space for parents to share the reality of what it’s like when autism becomes "apparent" in public. We will discuss:

  • The Emotional Toll: Sharing how it feels when your child elopes or melts down in front of others.

  • The Mindset Shift: Moving from "What will people think?" to "How can I help my child ride the wave?"

  • Expert Guidance & Practical Tactics: Our facilitators will share professional strategies for the heat of the moment, including:

    • The Privacy Shield: How to reduce sensory input and stop the "audience" effect.

    • Communication Tools: Using "De-escalation Cards" and "Direct Requests" to manage bystanders.

    • The After-Action Plan: How to implement low demands and the "5-Minute Reset" for yourself and your child once the storm has passed.

Where & When

  • 🗓 When: Thursday, April 30, 2026

  • Time: 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

In this peer support group, you will:

  • Connect with others who truly understand the unique challenges of supporting a child or teen with ASD in public spaces.

  • Find Support within a community that values your experience and offers self-compassion, not judgment.

  • Gain Expert Insights from facilitators who provide evidence-based strategies to keep your child safe and regulated.

  • Brainstorm practical ways to handle the "focused gaze" of the public and what you wish the community understood about your child's needs.

Facilitators will be on hand to maintain a safe, dignified space and to provide resources based on the group's discussion. Immerse yourself in the conversation and leave with a plan for the next "public" moment.
