My Heart-Led Commitment: Alisa Geller-Obouhov on Finding Deep Purpose in ABA Therapy
As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we’re spotlighting the dedicated staff who embody the mission of LRCSS. In this post, we hear from Manager Alisa Geller-Obouhov as she reflects on her personal journey and the profound purpose she finds in providing Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) therapy.
Advocacy and Empathy: How LRCSS’s ABA Focus Creates a Ripple Effect of Change
Working at Lake Ridge Community Support Services and providing Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) therapy to children, youth, and adults is far more than a professional commitment; it is the cornerstone of my personal purpose and a reflection of my deepest values. I chose this path because I am driven by the fundamental belief that every individual, regardless of their neurodiversity or the complexity of the challenges they face, deserves a dedicated advocate who sees their full potential. Everyone deserves the opportunity to grow, to find their unique voice, and to reach a level of independence that allows them to lead a fulfilling, self-determined life. What keeps me inspired and motivated each day is the privilege of witnessing progress that the outside world might easily overlook. The first time a non-verbal child uses a functional communication system to express a basic need instead of reaching a point of frustration, or the moment a teenager masters a social nuance that previously felt like an impenetrable barrier. In the field of ABA, success is a marathon, not a sprint, and it is measured in these small, meaningful steps that build a foundation of confidence and change lives over time.
These breakthroughs are never the result of a single person’s effort; they represent a beautiful synergy of resilience and teamwork between therapists, clients, and families who are all working toward a common goal of empowerment. Perhaps the most profound realization I have had in this field is that I learn just as much as I teach, every client and every family I work with brings a unique set of strengths, cultural perspectives, and life experiences to the table, acting as my greatest instructors in the true definitions of patience, creativity, and deep compassion. They challenge me to meet people exactly where they are, rather than where we expect them to be, and this trust forces me to evolve both as a clinician and as a human being.
Being part of this field means celebrating progress in its many forms, supporting families through their hardest days, and committing to a lifetime of continuous learning as the science of ABA evolves. It is this ongoing growth, the transformation I see in my clients and the professional development I feel within myself, that fuels my passion and keeps me motivated to show up and give my best every single day. Every session is an opportunity to contribute to a story of success, and every challenge is a chance to refine my approach to better serve those who rely on our expertise.
This work requires a unique blend of scientific rigor and heart-led empathy, and I am honoured to dedicate my career to a field that prioritizes the dignity and progress of the individual above all else. By focusing on the unique needs of each person, we create a ripple effect of positive change that extends far beyond the therapy room and into the community at large. Ultimately, my commitment to Lake Ridge Community Support Services is a commitment to the belief that everyone has a story worth telling and a future worth fighting for, and I am eager to continue this vital work with dedication and heart.
