Navigating the Education System

This program will allow you as a parent or caregiver to:

• Better navigate the school system’s processes

• Properly articulate your child’s needs in the language of the school board

• Access the ideal supports for your child

• Ensure the goals set for your child are appropriate

You will learn key information about navigating the school system including:

• What happens when you register my child for school

• The 5 different placements your child could receive and the process for the committee that determines which one

• What rights your child has in the education system

You’ll even learn what to do if:

• The school board says they cannot support your child

• You need to appeal their decisions on your child’s placement

• You want to request a change to your child’s supports

When you attend you will also receive:

• Tracking sheet templates so you can keep records of meetings held, emails received, action items, timelines for follow up

• Tip sheets on the processes for both the Identification, Placement, Review Committee and the Individual Education Plan process

Program Includes

• 1 virtual group information session (see upcoming session dates below).

• 1 to 2 individual follow-up sessions with a clinician. Sessions will be delivered either in person or virtual based on preference and current public health requirements at the time of each session.

Content will be specifically for Durham District School Board & Durham Catholic District School Board with some overlay into the Kawartha Pine Ridge and Peterborough, Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board.

Eligibility Requirements

• Must care for a child under 18 with Autism Spectrum Disorder

• Registered with the Ontario Autism Program with an OAP Registration Number

Participation Requirements for Virtual Sessions:

• Access to an internet connection

• Electronic device with camera and microphone

• Private space for learning
